I totally forgot about book chat yesterday but I really want to link up so I'm doing it a day late.
I am currently in a reading holding pattern but I did just finish The Perks of Being a Wallflower this week.
What did I think?
I know you're dying to know since I made such a big deal about wanting to read it.
I have to say I did not like it nearly as much as I liked the movie. Rarely do I see a movie without reading the book first but this time I did things in reverse. The characters in the movie seemed so much deeper for some reason even though they behaved almost exactly the same.
I know, everyone LOVES this book but I just couldn't fall in love with it for some reason.
There was also the hype which usually I fall right into with everyone else (I think I just called myself a follower) but I can't say that I would rave about this book.
Maybe I just feel too much in love with the movie to be able to really love it.
That being said, there were some plot things I really liked in the book that didn't make it to the movie mostly having to do with Charlie's family. I got more of a sense of the complications between Charlie, his mom, dad and sister in the book then in the movie but that didn't save it for me.
Now I'm not saying don't give it a try if you are thinking about it but go in knowing it may not live up.
And WAIT to see the movie before you read the book. But go see the movie because it really is something.

moving on
I'm thinking my next reading endeavor is Gone Girl. Another hyped up book but maybe because I've managed to stay away from any spoilers I could get on the wagon with this one. I think I may have to buy it though because there are 16 people waiting for it at the library and 208 who want to check it out on Kindle. I will not be waiting that long.
Anyone have it on Kindle who can share it with me?
Help a desperate reader out!
Even if I do get my hands on Gone Girl I'm going to have a lot of time this week to read so if you have any recommendations, comment below!

You definitely have to let me know how you like Gone Girl...I haven't read it but I've been wanting to!
ReplyDeleteThis book is on my to read list. I haven't seen the movie yet because I HAVE to read the book first.
ReplyDeleteI've been on the waiting list to read Gone Girl for what feels like forever. I think I might have to give in and buy it too.
Oh, I completely agree about Perks. I read the book a couple years ago and liked it well enough, but I didn't really see why everyone was so infatuated with it.
ReplyDeleteThe movie, however, made me cry. I loved it.
I see Perks and Gone Girl on the shelf everytime I'm in Target. And I haven't splurged on either yet. I hate having book-buying-remorse.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see the movie now, because I did love the book! And I have Gone Girl on my Kindle, but it isn't lendable. :( Unless there's another way I can share it with you that I don't know about!
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way about Perks. It was the beginning of a long list of over-hyped let-downs for me...Gone Girl being one of them. Gone Girl is shocking, and that's why I believe it is so popular. I say, save your money and if you still want to read it when it comes up at the library, get it. But that's just me. :)
ReplyDeleteSwinging by from The Book Chat. I love *Perks* much more when I was in high school (more relevant, perhaps?) than I did rereading it in my late 20s. I'm looking forward to the movie, once it's out to rent.
